Anthropology Student Sessions // ASS  06: Movie screening // Eat Drink Man Woman

ASS (Anthropology Student Sessions) in cooperation with the Sinological Society Yuan will hold a film screening of Eat Drink Man Woman 飲食男女 by director Ang Lee 李安.

Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, a story about family issues of a widowed chef, is a panegyrical portrayal of the early 90’s. For the Taiwanese middle classes this period of political liberalization and economic growth was a Belle Epoque before the Asian economic crisis.

A discussion about the troubles of the generation of Taiwanese born at the time the film was made will follow after the screening.

“The white man’s tendency to indulge in narcissistic self-analysis makes ethnographic research in Europe very difficult. […] As soon as the Europeans have written up their theories they start to believe in them. If you read these works of egocentric self-justification, you risk being taken in by the elaborate style in which they’re written and by their seemingly logical arguments. It is easy to end up thinking like the white natives that a curved line is straight, nonsense makes sense and the weird is normal.” (from the movie)

Join the next A.S.S. where we’re going to watch Darkest Deepest Austria (Dunkles, Rätselhaftes Österreich) directed by Austrian film-director Wippersberg. The mockumentary purports to be an episode of “Other Countries, Other Customs: Kayonga Kagame Shows Us The World,” a production of the fictitious All African Television network. Kayonga Kagame, the on-camera host ethnologist leads the audience into the darkest regions of the Eastern Alps and analyses the customs and activities of locals, such as the Oktoberfest, which becomes Christian ritual in his interpretation. The movie is a great satire of National Geographic documentaries, as well as a strong critics of the colonialist tendencies of European anthropology.

The movie will be followed by a discussion.

The Anthropology Student Session will meet for the fourth time. We will be very glad to welcome you in A-Infoshop on Wednesday 31st of January at 19:00. Topic of this session will be Relation_s.




Relation_s – Workshop about reflecting on our relationships

We all are somehow in a relation with other people, that mostly are labelled as familial, collegial, romantic, befriended. In the next Student Session we try to deconstruct these labels reflecting on how they already come with norms, unwritten rules, expectations and conventions. Albeit these categories are useful, they also put relations in arbitrary order. We invite everyone to participate in the workshop with reflecting on their own relationship experiences. Afterwards sharing our experiences, we are going to talk about "amatonormativity", the dominance of (hetero) romance in our society. Its about the impacts of (often harmful) romantic ideas we internalize from early years on. There will also be a chance to talk about the connection between romantic love and capitalism.

AnthropologyStudentSessions //ASS no1 // Queer theory

Move your A.S.S-es to [A]-Infoshop*! The Anthropology student sessions are starting the second round. Every two weeks in [A]-Infoshop, AKC Metelkova! First edition on December 6th at 7 pm!

Our aim is to create a space of discussion among people interested in anthropology and social sciences where it is possible to share and exchange our knowledge. Our group is based on the principles of horizontality and inclusivity, with no formal functions, positions, no leadership and no membership fees. The sessions don’t only address anthropology students, but everybody who is interested in the discussed topics.

Next to the fireplace, drinking a tea or a beer we will listen to presentations, discuss readings or films. Everybody is free to come up with topics that matter to them and/or that they are currently working on.

Our first session is going to deal with the topic of queer anthropology. We will reflect on the questions of what or who is a queer, where is the place of queer theory in the field of anthropology and also on its obstacles. The basis of our discussion will be two articles which are accessible on our facebook page and on the facebook event.

Always After: Desiring Queerness, Desiring Anthropology by Margot Weiss, in which the author is dealing with the development of queer theory in anthropology and the importance of queerness trough identity, normativity and desire.

ASS še ni zaljučil svoje sezone; nadaljujemo tudi v juniju. Ker je ponovno tu stresno izpitno obdobje, pridite na sproščujočo pavzo na družabne igre v [A]Infoshopu.  V dobri družbi in ob hladnem pivu, bomo igrali družabne igre, se morda naučili še kakšno novo in ob tem ponovno opazovali z udeležbo, na kakšne načine vse smo lahko homo ludens - človek, ki se igra. Vabljeni ste, da prinesete svoje najljubše igre in se nam pridružite pri kolektivni seansi igranja.

ASS: Ustvarjalne delavnice

Tokrat bomo zašilili svinčnike in kracali po papirju. Da ne bo ostalo zgolj pri kracah, se bomo sproti podučili še o osnovah prenašanja tridimenzionalnega (ali štiri in večdimenzionalnega, odvisno od domišljije) sveta v dve dimenziji. Vabljene-i!

ASS bralni krožek: Biopolitika

Prihodnjo sredo nadaljujemo bralni krožek, posvečen biopolitiki. Tokrat bomo brali esej kamerunskega zgodovinarja in politologa Achilleja Mbembeja z naslovom Necropolitics (2003). Avtor kot temeljno orodje sodobnih oblastnih mehanizmov izpostavlja podrejanje življenja moči smrti in pod drobnogled vzame rasizem, suženjstvo, nacizem, vojne ter sodobni kolonializem.

ASS bralni krožek: Biopolitika

Na bralnem krožku se bomo posvetili konceptu biopolitike, oziroma sodobnim političnim tehnologijam, ki se osredotočajo na življenje samo. Zanimale nas bodo problematike, kot so rasizem in evgenika, seksualnost in reprodukcija, biomedicina, politike tveganj, kolonializem in še kaj. Na prvem srečanju se bomo ukvarjali s tekstom Michela Foucaulta, transkripcijo predavanja, ki ga je 17. marca 1976 izvedel na College de France v sklopu predavanj, ki so kasneje izšla pod imenom Il faut defendere le societe (v ang. prevodu Society must be defended).

Začenjamo novo sezono ASS dogodkov v [A]Infoshopu. Uvodno srečanje bo posvečeno igri.
