“… maybe
is time for a new ‘stone’.”
Since
the end of 2010, squatting in The Netherlands is forbidden by law.
Despite all conflicts with authorities, the squatters, besides the
Provo Movement and other action groups, gave Amsterdam the image of
Freedom. This film outlines the history and the situation now.
On
1st October 2010, a protest against the squatting prohibition
law of more than 800 people ended up being attacked by riot cups and
11 confirmed arrests.
João
Romão explains in conversation:
“… as squatting is now a criminal activity, people can be
arrested or suffer strong attacks from riot police, as has been
happening in the last year.”
'Squatted
Freedom' by João Romão, a journalist, economist and activist living
in Amsterdam, give us a fascinating vision of the Dutch squatters. A
good selection of archival footage and interesting interviews with
current and ex-squatters show us the captivating story of squatters'
movement.
