In recent years several right formations - fascist, populist or nationalist - seem to have taken on a greater visibility and political penetration in European populations. They are the product of the major changes we are going through, a symptom of a progressive social disruption. Such formations are fighting both against a European Union that has expropriated the nation states of their sovereignty and in defense of a supposed cultural identity of the West , ' threatened’ today by the growing migration flows. In Italy CasaPound represented one of the clearest and paradigmatic expressions of neofascist and national identity that increased in those years of economic and social crisis.
This anthropological thesis studies the phenomenon of third millennium fascism represented in Italy by the movement CasaPound born in Rome in 2003. Through an ethnographic study of this movement, this dissertation enquires about the existence of a "boundary dividing the fascist from the non-fascist man ".
Militants of this movement see fascism as a way of living, an existential attitude, a "feeling of the world". Its understanding has thus to go farther than a simple political analysis, to grasp those aspects of experience, emotivity, membership, which are preponderant in fascists' statements. Third millennium fascism seems thus a phenomenon beyond the simple logical and consequential ways of analysis. Its logic seems represented by the absence of an internal coherence. Rationality seems not to be the right tool neither to grasp the complexity of fascist phenomenon, nor to propose a strategy for facing the persistence of fascism in European history.
Studying the structure, culture and action of this movement - and collecting the reasons of belonging expressed by its militants - is an important contribution to the understanding of a political culture that goes far beyond those the claim openly calling themselves ' fascists of the third millennium '. Anthropological observation and analysis of a specific case have reveled many of the elements that, in different ways and in different forms, characterize the feelings and behaviors of an ever growing part of European societies, taken in the stream of a transformation difficult to grasp and predict outcomes.
